What Workers' Compensation Benefits Are Available?

Workers' compensation benefits include payment for your medical treatment, appropriate compensation for any permanent injuries or disfigurement and, in some cases, replacement of your lost wages. Benefits are also available to the dependents of those who have died in workplace accidents or due to occupational diseases.

  • Medical benefits — Workers' comp pays all reasonable and necessary medical expenses for services provided by an authorized doctor.
  • Temporary total disability (TTD) benefits — If you are temporarily unable to work at all because of a work-related injury or illness, you can receive wage replacement benefits of two-thirds of your average weekly wage, up to a maximum. Benefits begin after three days of missed work.
  • Temporary partial disability (TPD) benefits — If you can work, but only at reduced hours, at reduced pay, or with modified duties, you can receive wage replacement benefits for the difference between what you earn doing so and two-thirds of your average weekly wage before the injury.
  • Permanent partial disability (PPD) benefits — If you sustained permanent injuries but can still work, you are compensated for any loss of function or disfigurement by a cash award based on an "impairment rating."
  • Permanent total disability (PTD) benefits — If can't work at all due to a long-term disability caused by the work accident or illness, you are compensated for loss of function or disfigurement and also receive wage replacement benefits.
  • Vocational rehabilitation benefits — Your employer and its workers' comp insurance company can voluntarily offer these benefits.
  • Death benefits — Workers' compensation benefits are provided for dependent spouses and children. They include reimbursement for funeral and burial expenses and a weekly wage replacement benefit.
